Hardware
Top-class components.
Three components determine the quality of a health band: the processor, the motion sensor, and the optical heart rate sensor. At ona, all three come from manufacturers that also equip the highest quality wearables on the market.
Processor & Bluetooth
The brain of ona. Chips from Nordic are used in the WHOOP 4.0, in sports watches from Polar and in the Polar Loop, in the Withings ScanWatch, and in the Ultrahuman Ring. ona uses the latest generation with Bluetooth 6.0 – faster, more efficient, and with sufficient power reserves for algorithms executed directly on the wrist.
Motion sensor
Records steps, sleep movements, and gestures across six axes – acceleration and rotation. This is exactly what makes the difference between 'counts steps' and 'understands movement': wrist rotations, naps, and activity changes are reliably distinguished from one another. Motion sensors from ST are used in Fitbit trackers and most smartphones.
Optical heart rate sensor
Green light measures heart rate, red and infrared light measures blood oxygen saturation. Four photodiodes instead of the usual one or two capture more signals. This keeps the measurements stable even during movement and with darker skin tones. Continuous with 25 measurements per second.
Battery
200 mAh, 12 to 14 days of runtime per charge. Designed for more than 500 charge cycles with at least 80% remaining capacity. With two charging cycles per month, this corresponds to about 20 years. Tested according to IEC 62133-2 and UN 38.3.
Each device is tested
No sampling: Each individual ona undergoes a test of the optical sensor at the end of production. The rejection rate is below 0.3%.
Proven platform
Motion sensor and firmware are already in use in more than 100,000 devices, the latest generation optical sensor in around 20,000 devices. ona is not a first generation, but a consistent reduction to the essentials.
Polar chest strap
The standard in sports. A chest strap measures heart rate electrically directly at the heart – similar to an ECG and not optically at the arm. If the values of an optical sensor match those of the chest strap, it measures reliably.
Masimo pulse oximeter
Masimo manufactures the finger sensors that are used worldwide in hospitals to measure blood oxygen saturation. The clinical reference for SpO₂.
Omron pedometer & Apple Watch
Omron is considered a reference manufacturer for pedometers. The Apple Watch serves as a benchmark among wearables for sleep and calorie values.
1 to 3 bpm average deviation; each measurement was within 3 bpm
3.4 bpm average deviation; 92% of all measurements were within 10 bpm
1.7 percentage points average error (ARMS); all measurements were within 3 percentage points
100 % of nights detected within 20 minutes; Apple Watch: 95 % when waking up; naps: 97 %
96 % accurate; Omron itself achieved 90 %, a competing band 82 %
96 % within tolerance; competitors achieved 63 % in the same test

Questions & Answers
Briefly explained.
Features
How does ona track sleep?
Based on movement and pulse, ona detects falling asleep and waking up, distinguishes between light, deep, and REM sleep, and captures naps as well as breathing quality during the night. The Sleep Score summarizes sleep duration, regularity, and recovery.
What is Body Energy?
A value between 0 and 100, based on heart rate, activity, stress, and sleep. It shows how much energy the day has consumed and how much the night has replenished. A high value in the morning and a low value in the evening indicate that the balance is right.
How are stress and recovery determined?
Based on heart rate variability (HRV), ona deduces how stressed the nervous system is and how well it recovers. The values are for orientation and not for diagnosis.
What activity values does ona capture?
Steps, distance, calories, and training load. 152 sports modes are available. Walking, running, and cycling are automatically recognized. Additionally, resting heart rate, SpO₂, and breathing rate are recorded in detail.
What does Body Age mean?
Body Age assigns your fitness to an age – based on recovery, activity, sleep, and stress. The feature is activated after three days of wear, once sufficient data for a reliable assessment is available.
What is the instant measurement?
A press on the band is enough: heart rate, SpO₂, and stress are measured within seconds without needing to open the app.
Quality & Evidence
What evidence is there for the sensors used?
Complete data sheets and a validation report with the results of tests against reference devices from section 02 are available for all components. The component manufacturers Nordic Semiconductor and STMicroelectronics may be named.
How is accuracy ensured?
At two levels: by validating the algorithms with chest straps, pulse oximeters, and reference counters, as well as through the optical end-of-line test of each individual device during production. Additionally, Vonmählen conducts its own comparative measurements with the Apple Watch and Garmin devices. The results will be published at market launch.
Is ona a medical device?
No. ona is a wellness product for tracking sleep, energy, activity, and recovery. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, or prevent diseases.
Data & App
What languages does the app support?
At launch, eleven languages are available: English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish, Hebrew, Arabic, Hindi, and simplified Chinese. The app automatically adopts the system language of the smartphone.
How long does the battery last?
12 to 14 days. Magnetic charging in less than two hours.
